3D-Visualization software opens valuable window on cells
As medicine progressed beyond treating disease symptoms to addressing the root causes, the study of proteins moved to the front line. The ability to visualize the geometry of these organic molecules is crucial in order to determine where and how strongly antibodies bind to them. Researchers specializing in Visual Computing gathered together at Fraunhofer Austria in Graz to develop a simulation software application called BioBrowser that enables 3-D viewing of proteins from all angles.
“When examining molecules, an enormous flood of data is generated that in itself makes little sense at all. BioBrowser converts this data into graphic images and makes the links between different molecules visible,” explains Dr. Eva Eggeling, the Head of Visual Computing.
This software, which calculates and displays high quality 3D models of complex proteins that can be interactively manipulated, can also be used in the study of toxic pathogens. These infectious agents corrupt proteins by attacking weak spots in the molecules. Determining exactly how toxins work is the first step in prevention.
Best-in-Class 3D-Visualization Software Providers:
- Offer libraries with predefined materials that can be extended or customized
- Provide three levels of rendering: drafting, modeling and photorealistic rendering
- Software for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems
Top Considerations Before Selecting 3D-Visualization Software Provider:
3D-Visualization has proved its worth but as the design applications become more complex, users are running into memory constraints. More 64-bit versions are becoming available that both provide more storage and the ability to better manage memory. Users whose work makes great demands on hardware and software need to investigate whether the 64-bit version of their favorite design applications is offered.
